What kind of university did you imagine? Playing a guitar on the grass with romance, dating a lover here and there on campus, a lecture with the discussion method which helps to freely exchange your ideas with students in the same class and a university culture about sharing your own philosophy with friends by drinking all night. Did you also draw a fine picture of your university life above these? However, this semester has already taken about two months, how are you feeling? Have you found differences between your university in illusion and real university? DKH heard freshmen thinking about it.

*The Below discussion is imaginary based on the interview.

DKH held the place where freshmen discuss the differences between university as an illusion and a rel university. Before getting started, briefly I introduce the students. Gun-Hee Lee(Dept. of Sino-Korean Education), Yeo-Jin Choi(Dept. of English), Jea-Young Kim(Dept. of Business Administration), Seung-Hyuk Mun(Dept. of Chemistry) and So-Jung Park(Dept. of Law). They took part in the discussion.

DKH: First, We congratulate you on the entrance to DKU. Well, let’s get started. Before you entered here, what did you imagine about university life?

Gun-Hee Lee(Lee) : Until this year before I was a university student, my life was full of study, one day I watched a sitcom called ‘Non-Stop,’ and I thought in the university I could study less, and the place where I can study particular subject I really want.

Yeo-Jin Choi(Choi): Yes, I also expected to enjoy my life after being a university student. Especially, I knew whoever could meet their boy friend!

Jea-Young Kim(Kim): University that I thought about is the place where I can study deeply, and I can exchange my thoughts with my school-mates. But, I realized that here’s not as much as what I thought.

DKH: Okay, well, how is it different?

Seung-Hyuk Mun(Mun): I thought the university would allow me to get much free time, but I couldn't have any free time as much as I expected thanks to the department’s events, assignments. I became busier because of a lot of things.

Lee: Right, to make a school time table is one of the stresses, but the hardest thing is taking the required liberal arts that lower my academic achievement. I understand DKU’s stance, but students pay for their expensive tuition for taking their favorite classes, so I hope DKU allows us to take what we want to study. And, in the sitcom, they showed us that the school is some kind of a place to enjoy. If there are other students thinking like me, maybe that is because of the sitcom. I think they would agree with me.

Choi: I agree with Seung-Hyuk. The assignments are much more than I expected. Though the study in the university is deeper than in high school, too much homework does not let me have free time. It is totally different from what I thought. Besides, a lot of stairs make it really hard. The facility of the university is also different from what I anticipated. The Dept. of English usually has lectures on the four floor or the fifth floor. So, for it, my legs have to feel tough. I hope an elevator will be built as soon as possible.

So-Jung Park(Park): I agree with Yeo-Jin. I think it’s short of the welfare for students. I want to make it easy for students to use the central-library. I’m dissatisfied with borrowing books in the library because it close early on Saturday.

Kim: I also think that the university is the place that would let me freer, but It made me wonder 'Is there real freedom in university?' Like what Gun-Hee Lee said. I just take the timetable that is already set including the liberal arts.

Park: Though some things made me disappointed, it is similar from the imagined university to the real. I’m happy that the campus life allows me to be free about my hair, fashion and other things.

DKH:¡¡I see. Most students said that it's different from the university you imagined. Then are you satisfied with your campus life or not?

Choi: It's not the same as what I imagined but as you know from human nature you should have good ability to adapt. So, I'm satisfied with it.

Kim: I think that in my case, I'm satisfied more than dissatisfied. Maybe why I think like this is there are many great professors.

Mun: I'm dissatisfied. In my opinion, freshmen should be given enough time to adapt school. Also, the amount of assignment should get increased gradually as time goes by.

Lee: I'm fully dissatisfied with my campus life. I also had some illusions. I realized that it's different what I dreamt of when I made out the schedule. After Lectures begin, there are lots of events and assignments that make me mad. Those make me wonder about the campus life I dreamt of. However, I've already prepared many things for becoming a Chinese character teacher so I feel less harder than other students who seem to feel hard too much. But I think it's a really good point that I can meet a huge amount of people, they're really various. It could give us indirect experience so it's really cool!

DKH: The feeling of satisfaction about campus life is divided into equal halves. Then, what should DKU do to try to make the satisfying university which you guys dreamt of?

Mun: I suggest that the amount of assignment should be reduced for freshmen. Freshmen are busy adapting to a new campus life. the large amount of assignment can be a burden. I can't feel free enough like this reason.

Lee: I think that it could be good for schools to provide a support program such as counseling to students who go through agony because of disharmony with their illusion. Of course, there is a counseling center in the school. But I hope that more programs wil be opened. Many students suffer from a state of torpor so they want to try counseling. I think that it's not enough to try counseling. For example, schools should offer full support for students to make their dreams come true if there are some students who are caught with the illusion.

DKH: Today we discussed the topic about the university in illusion versus the university in reality. By and large, the university in illusion is similar to the one in reality. But, there is lots of opinion that something different is also too much. If we see the word 'University' from the root and ending, it means that knowledge is gathered around university like the revolution of the solar system. We finish this discussion with considering the true meaning of university. Thanks for your precious time.
