These days, survival programs are very popular in Korea, such as 'Survival, I Am a Singer' and 'Star Audition, The Great Birth.' We were crazy about these shows, and these shows are based on a system in which someone must fail to choose the winner. We brand the dropout as a loser, passing over the loser's effort. And we only remember game's result, not the process. Why is there a buzzword like a 'Terrible world only remembers the winner' touching our mind? From now on, we need to rethink where is the beginning of this wrong recognition regarding the dropped as a loser. In this situation that everyone could be a loser, why our society is crazed about 'The first'?

This conception of triggering excessive competition is connected with capitalism. It is not too much to say that our society is capitalism of the competition, by the competition, for the competition. Over time, focus is changing to 'Who is making maximum profit in a short time.' The prehistory of capitalism was focused on making a profit, but the present capitalism is focused on 'Who gets the first in the age of limitless competition.' In other words, matter of 'Who is making big profits becomes 'Who is the first'. Therefore, it seems that survival programs are getting tremendous popularity this year. So, why our society becomes crazy about the first, and not generous to a loser? In order to find out this matter, we interviewed prof. Seong-Yoon Kim who is an expert in this field.

Q. These days, survival programs are increasingly popular. It shows our society is not generous to the loser. Why do you think that our society is not generous to the loser?

Prof. Seong-Yoon Kim: It is not only our society, but it's all over the world. We are living in the digital age including era of capitalism. In the analog age, we determined ranking from first one to last one. But the digital era is not. The digital era has only one question, "Are you a winner or loser?" This phenomenon can be explained briefly by the flow of neoliberalism, 20:80 rule. '20:80 rule' is the distribution of global income to be very uneven, with the richest 20% of the world's population controlling 80% of the lower classes. It shows our society is faced with problems, polarization of wealth in an age of globalization. So, the first has all of the wealth and honor, but the rest of the competitors should try hard to get the first. Because everyone is dying to get that position, so people can't afford to be generous to a loser.

Q. How to solve these social problems of not accepting a loser?

Prof. Seong-Yoon Kim: That is the biggest hole of neoliberalism, but there is no perfect solution. However, we need to change our social atmosphere structurally. Through the government's public policy, we can correct the flow of neoliberalism because a lack of a system to save the loser caused social polarization. But first of all, we should change our attitude. Everybody cannot be a winner, so we should realize this truth. Don't brand the loser as a inferior.

Now we are living in the capitalism age including the digital age. However, as Prof. Kim's word, even though we live in a digital age, we don't still have enough space to permit a loser. As TV programs reflect our reality, people are extremely excited at survival programs where people are competing against each other to win the game because progress of game is only focused on the winner. So we can't see cooperative appearance between winners and losers. But there is no existing permanent winner and permanent loser. Defeat and victory could be frequently changed. So, if you brand the loser as an inferior by only one game, that is not good. If you don't feel anything in other's defeats, I hope that you will rethink this. How generous are you to the loser?
