One of the reasons we go to university is to study in depth our own major. But sometimes you may feel not enough about your major study. Have you ever thought about DKU paid extra aid so you could study in depth for your major? These days, DKU chooses several departments to give active supports as like proving the question mentioned above. Now, let's have a look at those aids provided from DKU as it is for dankookians!
Occasionally, you may see the sign of "Operating Accreditation for Major Education"(OAME) in front of the department door. If your department office has this sign, it means the school actively supports your major. The total support fund is 600 million won, 300 million won budget for each campus. Our school is supporting ten different departments from each campus, total of 20 departments. The selected departments receive three million won budget of a year and every year our school make an appraisal whether it is worth to keep supports or not. Then, how do they use this budget?

The budget will be used for this!

OAME has the following programs: boosting the learning ability of major study, helping students to find a job, developing teaching methods, improving the quality of professor-study and so on. Dept. of Public Administration of Cheonan campus supports students to study in depth of their major by diagnose on science of public and constitution. Dept. of Social Welfare supports their students by inviting expert instructors to provide high quality lectures and provide exam materials for exam preparation to the selected study group. Also students go a field trip to a social welfare organization and have direct experience through this enhanced major education program. In the Dept. of Exercise Prescription, the program allows to measure the cardiorespiratory functional capacity by using the step box(it's an instrument used in aerobics), study energy consumption by using an electromyogram(a record of electrical activity of muscle tissue) and VT (Ventilatory Threshold, a kind of diagnostic of oxygen intake while you excercise) and also it supports applying for jobs related to this major. Dept. of Sports Management supports students to award certificates of a related major, train the physical educator and aids study group of major.
In Jukjeon campus, Dept. of Science Education is supported by this program like holding a demonstration contest of UCC to make a better science educator. They visit the educational, scientific organization and it is on progress. Dept. of Visual Communication Design is supported by academic-industrial cooperation, connecting in-tern program, holding an exhibition, conducting a united club seminar and so on.

Who makes the plan of OAME?
As it mentioned above, when the school sends them an official document concerning  OAME, each department have to make applications about the program they will do for a year. The school decides through this application whether applied departments can receive a budget or not. Mostly, professors construct the program. In detail they make plans such as improvement of class related to the major, holding many activities like a forum that can help students and class for preparing certification. This can be reflected not only by the professor's opinions but also the student's opinions too. If you think you need an aid to study your major hard, tell your professor about your opinion of what you need.
There will be department which is not eager to participate in this program even it has been chosen.
What the Dankook Accreditation Center for Educational Development(DACED) thinks commonly is that there is a lack of understanding on OAME. The school finishes the role by providing financial support to the program. The benefits students can get depends on the way how each department invests for the programs, such as the lectures, study after school, forum, employment lecture, those we might have waved away without notice. Thus, students should ask professors or to the department office or using internet and noticeboard actively.

Another Support from DKU, "Educational Characterization Service"
It’s not the only support from DKU. Related to DKU's development, there is the service which supports prospective departments. It is 'Educational Characterization Service"(ECS). Simply speaking of ECS, its purposes are not only to progress DKU but also to improve the quality of education. There are six departments selected within ECS: In Jukjeon campus, Dept. of Molecular Biology, Architectural Engineering, and Fashion Product Design, and in Cheonan campus, Dept. of Mongolian, Environmental Trade, and Landscape Architecture. Their programs are going well with plan. It seems like OAME, but it is given more financial support to build a high-quality-program. In the case of  Dept. of Mongolian, it’s too hard to find a textbook, therefore the department receives the budget for publishing a textbook through  ECS. It is not too much to say that the Mongolian textbook, which dankookians learn from now, is made by the support from DKU. In short, OAME provides benefits to most students but ECS is for advancing the departments themselves.

At Present, These Two Services Go Well?
Cho, Mun-Ju, the staff of DACED in Cheonan campus, said “The services are going well and we have monitored them steadily based on applications. For the success of services, the role of professors is the most important. As the department gets supported, professors lead students with ardor. Also, it is essential that students should participate in the program run by DKU. If professors and students help the services go well, of course it will go well.” She pointed out that the recognition of students and the ardor of professors are the most important in the support from DKU.

ECS started in the second semester of 2009 and OAME was carried out this year. The staff of DACED in Jukjeon campus said“These two services are at the beginning stage so we keep our eyes on the selected departments.”What we should realize is that all these supports came from our tuition fee. There is no obvious change to see until now. However, they could get a great result if professors and students have enthusiastic attitudes for these services. The DKU should increase this support service for more departments’benefit.
