Second semester has started with a new state of mind. Students will try something new and seek opportunities. At this time, students have many questions so they tend to make a phone call to ask some questions at school. Do administrative staffs of Dankook University(DKU) answer the students' questions with sincerity? Critical posts about its staff's unkind attitude are often put up on the Internet bulletin board. A few days ago, a student named Kim denounced Woogbi Hall(a dormitory of Jukjeon campus)staff's unkindness. Kim went to ask something in their lunch time. Although he misunderstood working hours, the staff said angrily "Hey you!! It is lunch time! What do you want?" and pushed him away. Actually how many of these unkind school staffs are there in DKU? Is there a place that students can ask for information without difficulty? So DKH made an inquiry to some departments by phone call as an ordinary student to know how kind they are.

* We chose three departments, Division of Scholarship, Division of International Affairs, and Career Service Center, which students might call frequently. We evaluate as A>B>C and arranged in order of 'Reception condition' (How long does it take to answer the phone?), 'First greeting' (Do they first greet and introduce?), 'Kindness' (Do they use the honorific words and kind tone of voice?), 'Positive about problem-solving' (Do they have the will to solve the problem?), and 'Last greeting' (Do they hang up after greeting?)

1. Division of Scholarship

I made an inquiry to the Division of Scholarship and introduced myself as a junior, in the Dept. of Applied Mathematics whose family is going through a financial difficulty. So I asked what kind of scholarships except for grade scholarship are there. But their answer was cynical. They said that "Just look at the school homepage." I asked them one more time that I couldn't understand the contents posted on the school homepage. They replied half-heartedly one or two things and said "Check the rest things." Like this, they answered irresponsibly. Their telephone counseling was evaluated 'Reception condition' B, 'First greeting' C, 'Kindness' C, 'Problem-solving initiative' C, 'Last greeting' C. (The rest are marked only A, B, C on the right of the department name in order of the above evaluation.)

2. Division of International Affairs (A/C/B/B/C)

I made an inquiry to Division of International Affairs and introduced myself as a junior in the Dept. of International Trade. I asked 'What kind of program are now in progress and what I have to prepare.' Their first answer was the same as the Division of scholarship. "Check on the school homepage." I asked them to explain more specifically. But they answered toughly and asked "Do you have a TOEFL score?" and said that please call them later after preparing for studying abroad. I felt that they didn't want to help students who are curious about studying abroad. It seems that they thought that it is none of their business if you go or not.

3. Career Service Center (A/A/A/A/B)

I felt hope from the Career Service Center. I made an inquiry by introducing myself as a junior from the Dept. of Japanese. Unlike other departments, the tone of voice and attitude were very kind. After asking some questions, He said "It is good for you to get a job counseling face to face." He also asked my name and contact number. Even though I said I can't visit the school because of the summer vacation, he said "Come here whenever after school starts. I will remember you." I felt his thoughtful mind that he really wanted to help me.

After the phone calls to DKU's three departments, all the departments except for the Career Service Center, were too unkind that they made my face frown. What about other universities? Are they unkind like us? To solve this question, we made the phone calls to each department of other universities as their students.

1. Office of Scholarship (A/B/A/A/B)

I called the official number of Kyunghee University and ask her to transfer to a department related to scholarship. With just one change, with a simple introduction, a staff member took my phone call. I introduced myself as a junior, asked him "I want to get scholarship not related to my school grade. What can you recommend t me?" He explained deeply and easily about scholarships given to low-income students, recommended model student and etc. He also didn't forget to say "There is a lot of information on the school homepage so you should look at it." Different from staffs of DKU who were unkind and made me feel unpleasant.

2. Office of Career Support Team (A/A/A/A/B)

Like previously, with the introduction of a kind voice, a staff member took my phone call. I introduced myself as a junior in the Dept. of Engineering and asked her about some programs that school the supports for careers. She kindly explained the detail of the programs that are now in progress, She said she was sorry for me that most present programs which are fit for me were finished. So she additionally told me the detailed schedule of the next career programs and said I can get counseling anytime and visit anytime.

<Cheonan campus of Sangmyung University>

1. Career Development Team (A/A/B/A/A)

I called the Career Development Team and introduced myself like previously from the Dept. of Japanese and ask a staff member that I want to get counseling about my career. She said "the expert counselor is now absent because, he is on vacation. You can meet him when class begins." And she suggested to me to make an appointment after the class begins. I felt a kind and positive attitude to her. However, just one thing was missing. When a staff who first received my phone call, transferred the call to the manager, she didn't say any words while transferring it. I felt a little bit upset. Besides this, she was generally kind and satisfied.

2. Student Welfare Team (A/A/B/B/A)

Next, I called the Student Welfare Team and asked like the previous division of scholarship. He said "There is a labor scholarship that receiving money after working at the school. But there are so many labor scholarships to explain. So please visit the school homepage and read what is fit for you. After that, if you don't get it, call me." It was same as DKU, saying 'visit the homepage,' but he explained more detail information about what part I have to look for and made efforts to help me.

Most career teams of universities including DKU were kind. However, the rest of the administrative departments' service was equally unkind just as students' dissatisfaction. On the contrary, Kyunghee University and Sangmyung University's most departments were kind and the service was good. We didn't mention in this article but in the case of Seoul National University and Myongji University, every part is graded more than B. So we can say DKU's administrative service is so much worse than other universities. There is a notice board named 'Administrative service' in the school homepage. With a charter saying 'We will do administrative service by putting emphasis on the consumer's situation with focusing communication and be kind.' And noticing each administrative department's code of conduct, it seems like they are working well externally. But, it could be that unkindness will easily change into kindness. The reason is the lack of publicity on the notice board and the result of the deactivated board 'Notifying the board about kind and unkind.' If you are trying to think more about the students while doing administrative service, you'll have to make efforts to make this board for administrative service to change just like their fine goal.
