A picture named‘The Reason Why We Should Go to a Good University’was once famous on the Internet. It depicted a spirit rally between Korea and Yonsei University at Jamsil Stadium on the left side and a few students lined up on a lawn on the right side. Although there is no story with the picture, it clearly shows that the deciding factor for judging a university does not depend only on how smart students are or how good they are at getting jobs. Maybe, customs and tradition will become much more important than the test scores, rankings and other numbers that change every year.
Think of the 2002 FIFA World Cup that boiled the Korean peninsula. You do not have to be serious about soccer to remember the cheering Red Devils on the street and the five-clap with‘Dae~han-min-kook’that automatically comes to mind. That spirit bonded all the people as one and even became internationally famous. Now, think of Dankook University's (DKU) Annual Festival that is held every May. What else can you think of besides the daily pubs and singers? This is not only the problem of the Annual Festival. The image that comes to mind when you think of DKU is also very limited. Some universities’cheer teams prepare well known performances so everyone from alumni to freshmen participate, while even pre-university students who dream about going to that university download those cheer songs and videos to buid up their spirit. It is quite different from us, who barely meet the cheer teams and do not really show our interest when they are on the stage, just waiting for the stars to come up.
Of course, the current custom and culture of DKU is not wrong. However, the fact that a university that now looks forward to its 70th anniversary in a few short years does not have something special to unite all students is not a satisfying one. But, this does not mean that we do not have those cultural entities at all. Our annual events such as ‘Daneumje,’‘Daedongje’and‘Dankook & Anseo Sports Festival’are just not ready enough. We need to give more meaning to those events and inspire Dankookians to participate more.
One very important element to arouse the spirit of Dankook is cooperation. For example, music related clubs can help compose or play the cheer songs for the cheer team, and advertising clubs can write copy or promotions for them.
We need to remember that the very basic structure of those is founded on the attention and participation of Dankookians. Without these, our events will not be effective no matter how good they are.
Whether you wanted to come to DKU or just applied based on your test scores, DKU is our name, face and mother school. If we do not continue to develop and improve our own culture, DKU will not act as a full university, only existing as a pre-step to getting a job.
In addition, celebrating the symbolic, organized and specified culture of DKU will offer another sound way to spend time for Dankookians besides just drinking alcohol or coffee. Also, it will improve the added value of DKU, such as its reputation, which is an important element in the improvement of the university.
University students nowadays are liberal and passionate. The chance to tap their unlimited energy is necessary, and they should not be too anxious about just studying and getting jobs. This is why we need our own culture to find our spirit.
