Getting a job is a very prominent worry to university students. So, it would be the source of trouble that they get a job after graduating or before graduating. If you turn on the TV, you can easily see that the unemployment rate among college graduates has drastically increased. It is inadequate to pay the tuition fee through parttime jobs, and we cannot always do parttime jobs. Then, what should dankookians do to get a job? DKH interviewed two dankookians who have plans to get a job after graduating or before graduating. They have tried very hard to achieve their dream. First interviewee was Byeong-Jun Mun(Dept. of Economics, Senior), student on a leave of absence, and he is planning to get a job before graduating.

Q. You are planning to get a job before graduating. What have you
done for your plan?

Mun : In my case, I was not interested in my major. So, after spending three years at university, I was seriously thinking about my dream. While I was worried about my dream, I had to decide leave of absence and then I wanted to find my aptitude. I thought about what I want to do, what I have to do and how to achieve success. So, after leave of absence, I attended many special lectures to find my dream. As a result, I found my aptitude, which is culture marketing. So I attended the project promoting play of ‘Titus’ in theater company called ‘Haddangsa.’ It offered excellent opportunities and experiences that university students need to build up on their career. I learned how to make web posters to encourage university students to buy tickets. I learned that not just old book’s theories but practices of marketing at that time. Finally, our play’s sales were raised up 700 percent than before. This results made me find my real dream, and encouraged me. After then, I was cast as a marketer of other plays. Recently I want to challenge anther genre which is music concert. So I applied for the position of marketing director of Korea Undergraduate Jazz Festival. I got the
job. In this place, I accomplished something much more than ever before. I raised funds worth 50million won capital from Daum and I established a networking party that freely exchanges people's ideas. My dream gradually found a shape
through these experiences. And it was good to see other’s passions. In the future, I will go back to school and study and work at the same time continuously
involved in culture marketing.

Byeong-Jun Mun has throughly built his careers. So, how about other students who have a plan to get a job after college? DKH interviewed Yu-Jin Seo(Dept. of Public Administration, Sophomore). She does not
plan to take any time off from college, and has a plan to get a job after raduating.

Q. You are planning to get a job after college. What have you done for your plan?

Seo : Actually, I think that getting a job before graduating is good, but my dream is to be a teacher. So I need more time to study, about three years after graduating. I think the most important thing is to live a full school life than taking time off from college. I have taken courses in teacher education and lifelong education from school. After two curriculums being completed, second level certification is given. Especially, if I finish courses in teacher education, I will be eligible for applying to teacher certification examination. So this course is very important to me. Teacher ducation class includes psychology of students interesting to me. But it is also important to take care for my major grade, Public Administration. The reason why managing my major grade is important is that I really need scholarships for outstanding students. To get the best out of school life, I think that it is essential to get a scholarship through making good marks at school. And I think I will go abroad to study too. In case of studying abroad, when I graduate from university, I will be very busy because of studying teacher certification examination. So, I went to Australia to study in this summer. I worked part-time for studying abroad during past few months. I wanted to test my ability, so I attended to club activities too. I believe that school life and exhibit contests have become a foundation of my life. Moreover, I am now working as a part-time consultant for two middle school students. I think that meeting many children is the first, and studying harder is also important as much as meeting them.

Two students had a dream and individual plans, and they worked really hard for it. My family has two university students so I cannot take any time off from college freely, moreover, I should barge my way after commencement. I think there are many students like me. If we get a job before graduating, we seem to pile up degrees and qualification so called Spec. If not, we should study hard in school. So, how about expert’s opinion? DKH went to Career Service Center(CSC) to receive counseling on it.

Q. There are two choices, getting a job after graduating or before graduating. What do you think about this?

CSC : Most students want the latter. For example, most of them do not want to delay graduation and employment except students who have economic conflicts and reasonable grounds. Most students determined to obtain a leave of absence because of expectation and anxiety. And most students think “I would be a better person if I take a temporary leave from college,” “I would be behind the others If I do not take a temporary leave from college.” However, when you apply for a job you want, you will be older than others. This is a problem. Lag of about two years than others will interrupt your employment. What students should know is companies want to employ experienced people not those who are prepared to experience. In other words, you’d better have direct experience of a job than spend your time in studying for unnecessary certifications. When you apply for a job, it will also be a good way to apply for smaller enterprises and gain experience and then you can apply for bigger enterprises through your career.

Also, current employment trend is ‘Useable right now.’ Old employment trend is ‘Test in a lump,’ but present employment demands for specialized experience in each field. People who have specialized experience mean that they are adaptable at workplace right now. In other words, our society has a structure that only welcomes distinctiveness. Dankookians should be aware of this point, and students find their own aptitude. Next, students need to accumulate their qualitative experience.

CSC said that current employment trend is experienced applicants who have skills and are easily adaptable at that place. The matter of getting a job after college or getting a job before graduating is appeared from two student’s interview which is completely different from each other. Byeong-Jun Mun is enjoying an active life after leave of absence. Yu-Jin Seo pays full attentions to her class work. This is not a matter of who is the best. Both students try hard to achieve their dream but most students say “I have no time. And I don’t have much money.” It is the same word “I am busy of excusing.” When successful people bring up negatives, they divert the negative to motivation. Do you have a plan? I hope to find our own aptitude as soon as possible. And I expect to get a job through focusing and choosing.
