"I contribute to the world with my ability to draw. I will draw as long as there is time, as long as there are people, and as long as I'm alive."

¡ã Keith Hering’s work, ‘Untitled’ produced in 198

This is the word of Pop Art artist Keith Hering. Pop Art is the recent trend of concept art that actively accepted by the mass media, advertisement and the public cultural visual image to the realm of art. Keith Hering's exhibition was held to celebrate the '2010 World Design Capital' and the anniversary of Keith Hering's death, who died 20 year ago. Keith Hering conveyed messages to people with clear lines and intense colors and gained many people's affections regardless of culture and generation.

Keith Hering's reputation was proved naturally by different age groups who visited his exhibition without distinction between sex. Keith Hering's works of art are the icons that you can see in many brand products such as CYON, Uniqlo, Swatch and more. We are accustomed to his works of art unconsciously. In spite of how his works may seem like child's scribble, how did Keith Hering get lots of respect and compliments regardless of the period?

DKH interviewed a Korean student in America through the internet. She is studying art to become a great artist like Keith Hering. She said “I just like Keith Hering's style. It is monotonous, but it is very dynamic. Also people are always jumbled in his works. In Keith Hering’s drawings, there are much more jumbled people that a single man alone. I think he uses lines well to give a sense of fullness and emptiness. And, Keith Hering drew shapes of motion or sound when he drew humans or animals. I think this method of expression makes humans or animals more dynamic in his drawings. As these special expressions are mixed well in his drawings, not only me but also many people like Keith Hering."

Keith Hering. When we hear his name, we may easily recall monotonous and humorous drawings. Besides, when you see his drawings, you can see them childish, just like the jokes of child. However, in his drawings, there are subtle meanings that he wanted to convey to the public.

For example, 'Untitled' which was produced in 1987. In this work, a person's
hand is on another person's shoulder. It means tranquility. In addition, there is a large red heart in the middle of them. It means friendship and belief of two. Keith Hering wished people would love each other regardless of generation, race and country through this drawing. Can't you feel that he is a warm-hearted person who loves everyone? Like this, Keith Hering's works are expressed simply. But all of them involve subtle messages to the public.

Keith Hering held a 'Keith Hering Foundation' to support the eradication of AIDS. Through this foundation, he wanted to interaction as a person beyond the talent of an artist. Finally, He died young, at the age of 31, by AIDS. However, Keith Hering still contributes to the world through his works.

Keith Hering sublimated serious subjects into simple lines and intense colors. So, I could see his signs of genius that express from minimum to maximum. You can appreciate a juggler who has this ability, Keith Hering's exhibition at Soma Art Museum in Olympic Park by September 9. You can feel the charm of Pop Art appreciating his works of art as much as his extraordinary appearance.
