What do you think is the role of universities in Korea? Traditionally it has been a place for study only and for people who want to put their efforts into a field of study. However, the role and function of the university in our society is changing. In modern times, universities are becoming a method of employment, and not simply for study.

The government announced a project last year entitled the University Structural Reform. Under this plan, they classify the performance of a university on a scale of 1 to 5. Based on the results, they plan on reducing the number of universities with low scores across Korea to at least 60. The objective is to raise the quality of university education by reducing the number of universities. The government is also expecting this plan to improve the value of a university education.

However, do they really think this plan will work? If they really want to improve education, they should focus on high schools. Now is not the time to figure out which university is the winner and which one is the loser.
Republic of Korea is famous for its high rate of college entrants. It has already exceeded 80% giving the world the impression that Korea has passion for education. However the reality is completely different. Most middle or high school students in Korea don’t know what they want to be in future. They don’t even have the motivation necessary to study.

There are two main kinds of high schools: schools for employment (special high schools that train specific skill sets) and schools that prepare students for entry to university (academic high schools). Although it seems like there are no problems under this system, there are. People attribute special high schools as being for predominately weak students, while academic high schools are for stronger students.

Many students are tacitly forced to enter academic high schools by their parents or through social pressure. They believe universities are a kind of measure of success and help you get better jobs and earn more money. To combat this academic school bias, the government needs to make the education in special high schools more specialized, so that students who only want to get a job and work in society can do so. In other words, is determining the rank of a given university really the solution necessary at this point?

People today say that pursuing a dream is immature and stupid. This kind of social stigma isn’t easy to brush off. As society becomes more difficult to live in, the more this kind of negative recognition will be strongly imprinted on the minds of people. In face of this negative situation, we need to take the time to remind ourselves about the true nature and meaning of the university.
