Dankook University (DKU)’s Dept. of Biological Sciences Professor Han Kyu-dong was awarded a Minister of Education commendation for his contribution to the LINC + (Leaders in Industry - University Cooperation) project. On September 15, the Ministry of Education held the 10th Anniversary Forum for LINC to reflect on the project’s achievements during the last 10 years. Professor Han was recognized for his role in the LINC+ project at Dankook, which was conducted in conjunction with the R&D medical and pharmaceutical company Theragen Bio.

Q1. Congratulations on winning a commendation from the Minister of Education. How did you feel when you heard the news? The LINC+ project works with government financial support to cultivate talent by operating an industry-academic friendly curriculum at universities and connects participants to companies and local communities. LINC+, which has been running since 2017, has established itself as a leading model for industry-academic cooperation and currently operates in 55 universities. Their aim is to help establish an education model with strong links to employment. Their ultimate goal is to create an industry-led university by strengthening their school’s employment capabilities.

A1. First, I want to thank DKU’s I-Dasan LINC+ Educational Development Institute and Theragen Etex. This project is a jointly managed educational partnership between DKU and Theragen Etex as a DTiNa (DKU-Theragen Institute for NGS analysis) research institute. The field of biology needs more time, human effort, and investment than other fields to visualize results. We have had good results based on our 9 years of steady and persistent effort. I hope DKU becomes a leader in industry-academic collaborations and achieves more results by encouraging more professors and companies to join this partnership.

Q2. What do you think is the reason that DKU’s industry-academic collaboration was selected as one of LINC+’s main success stories?

A2. I think cooperation between companies and universities are often too short-term. However, our project has been on-going for 9 years, since 2012. It started with the cooperation between enterprise and university, but it developed into a wide-scale cooperation between enterprise, our university, the research institute, and a hospital. The bio-enterprise department in Theragen Etex branched into Theragen Bio and has grown to be a KOSDAQ listed company next year. In short, LINC+ is made up of research and development, industrialization, commercialization, and human resource training. We published more than 20 joint papers and established an NGS clinical laboratory with the cooperation of DKU hospital, I-Dasan LINC+ Educational Development Institute, and Theragen Etex. And now, we are producing ‘Hello-Gene’ and ‘Thera-Biome’ services and more than 20 talented employees every year for dielectric enterprises.

Q3. That sounds very impressive. Are there programs unique to DKU’s LINC+?

A3. There are programs like ‘Fri-big-day’ for industry-academic related lectures, ‘Two-Way Work Experience · Capstone Design’ to help students with job applications, and ‘4C Cultivation of Ability and Talent Training Program’ for bio-related on-the-job-training.

Q4. What support can Dankookians (Students of DKU) get from LINC+?

A4. Students can link their own programs that they are interested in and accumulate results for each activity. It is helpful for individual records, ‘specs’, and ‘abilities.’ Specifically, the 4C Cultivation of Ability and Talent Training Program provides information on biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, drones, big data, and analytical instruments. In addition, it offers education on software used in office work, employment/start-ups, and patents. LINC+ also presents job opportunities to students from a variety of backgrounds and enterprises.

Q5. Do you have any advice for Dankookians who are participating or want to participate in LINC+?

A5. I was a student in DKU’s Dept. of Microbiology. When I was an undergraduate, there were no industry-academic collaboration programs, so we didn’t have opportunities like this. But there are many programs available now. I believe the active participation of students will help them find the direction of their dreams and an occupation to be proud of. An idea is just an idea, until you carry out and fulfill it, so please do. Putting plans into action is more important than one might think. If students participate and experience activities in the LINC+ program, they will be able to determine which job is suitable for them.

Throughout the interview, we learned about the main achievements of DKU industry-academic partnership programs run by DKU’s LINC+. The Dankook Herald is expecting to see great advances in their future collaborations. There are a lot of outstanding programs for Dankookians such as ‘Capstone Design’ and support for startups. So how about signing up?
