"The first impression is determined within a second with whatever the specific standard is that excludes people who do not fit one's standard." (Kevin Hogan)

As you can see, the first impression is determined in a very short time. Psychology researchers of Princeton University in USA showed a picture to volunteers and asked them to rate the level of 'good impression' they got from the person in the picture. Surprisingly, there wasn't any difference between decisions taken in 0.1 and 0.5 and 1 second. This is called 'Halo Effect.' Consequently, the first instant image influences greatly our relationships and business.

The first impression is more important at the first meeting!

- An image making expert, Eun-Sook Na, the chief consultant.

You know what? Our brain judges quickly whether one's appearance is attractive or not. If someone is tall and slim and his face is well-balanced, the brain of people who looks at him judges that he is an attractive person. Generally people do image-making so as to look good at the first meeting.

First, this behavior makes a good point at the first meeting.

As soon as you meet, shake hands with each other.

A heartfelt handshake could break down the walls the heart. Also you should have good manners to consider and value others. Then make small talk, the short friendly conversation. Small talk helps to open the other’s unconsciousness and become intimate before you start formal talk. Talk about a relevant topic, for example, the theme of the situation, hobby, etc. Once the other starts to talk, make eye contact each other, listen and respond carefully.

Second, try to make a favorable facial expression.

Find an appropriate smile. You could look in a mirror and practice making the most beautiful smile with the edges of the mouth up and teeth showing in some degree. Then you practice your smile looking at the mirror every morning and evening. You check the change of expression through taking face pictures monthly.

Third, an attractive voice is also important at the first meeting.

Abdominal breathing could help to vocalize because breathing capacity is bigger. While you speak “Umm~” repeatedly with close mouth, you could find a comfortable voice.

Last, additional methods to give a good first impression at the first meeting.

Don’t forget BMW (Body, Mood, and Word). <Body> make the other person feel comfortable by adopting a similar physical position. <Mood> look around and understand the atmosphere. <Word> make a response by using the other person's words.

Image is a habit so you should keep practice the image that you want. Let me add a few words in conclusion. You should not only make your appearance beautiful but also your heart. Without changing the inner image, the effect ends in such a short time.

Using those steps, we did an experiment 'Before & After.' The left one is a normal appearance and the right one is the appearance after practicing those steps.
