DKU enforced EMI firstly this year but other universities already have carried it out. However there have been a lot of controversial problems till now. In students’ point of view, it makes them feel aversion because they who are unfamiliar with the EMI have trouble to understand major lectures which is hard to be comprehended also the native language. In addition, classes can lean to the foreign and students studied aboard. As professors who are uncomfortable with English, they should spend more time to prepare the EMI rather than time to prepare the native language lectures. It takes time to focus on the study away from them because their time preparing the EMI will be increased. Moreover, it doubts whether they can communicate the high level knowledge to students. Like this, basic means, language, to give the knowledge to students turns to the obstacle of lecture.

School authorities said “Although there were some complaints about the EMI, we are going to expand it for the university’s global competition.” In case of College of Business and Economics, they wanted to open more than one EMI class. For the expanding EMI classed, existing problems have to be improved and then it will help raising the quality of EMI and students to upgrade their ability too. Then, what is the solution of these problems? Students who conducted the poll mentioned diversified lecture methods, improved professors’ English skill and a lot of EMI classes as solutions.

Q. What point of EMI do you think to be improved?

Dept. of Korean Language and Literature, freshman A: I hope professors should prepare more various teaching methods for the EMI.

Dept. of Korean Language and Literature, freshman B: By increasing the number of EMI, school helps students to choose EMI they want.

Dept. of English, sophomore A: There were too many students taking EMI in one class. Professor also had a trouble to manage all students so I think the number of students has to be lessened.

Dept. of English, sophomore B: Some professors have not enough ability to teach in English. At these classes, students cannot receive major knowledge deeply and the progress of lecture also falls behind. I hope university will arrange more complicate and careful process choosing suitable professors on EMI.

Most of Korean students have taken passive English education which is memorizing words, studying grammar and reading a lot of English text for the test. That is why they have problem with the EMI. So university should give opportunity taking many EMI to them from the first year. It can release their repulsion about it. However this measure is not enough. Taking classes only in the university cannot be solution of all these problems. That is, English public education system from elementary school has to be revised.

For the inexpert professors on the EMI, university has to offer them lots of workshops and lectures about EMI skill and give them incentive to inspire and motivate themselves. In the class, professors have to use more visual materials than before for the students. Rather than existing one-side giving teaching way, variety of ways is needed.

For the global competition, English Medium Instruction is good choice. There is no perfection at the first time. A lot of problems exist now and will occur but many students are expecting that those will be fixed. To be advanced in a competitive university, school has to reflect on the professors’ and students’ opinion and apply it to plan for the improvement. Through these processes, school can make EMI go forward to the right direction for all. Teaching professors and learning students also have to raise their ability up to the next level. The better EMI in quality is anticipated as much as increased quantity of it.
