"Because I'm your daughter, I was very happy¡¥¡¥." This is the last word Prof. Chang-Young Hee has left to us. To her, a mother is not only a companion to share the beginning and end of life but also warmness within itself. As society changes, the way we view our mother maybe change, but the warmth, love and sacrifice of mothers for her children remain as same. In other word, mother is so indispensable to us that “Mother Syndrome” in our culture will continue.

Novel - Please Take Care of My Mother

There is a mother, at the age of seventy, with five children, who has lived her entire life with severe headaches and chronic diseases. In truth, her role as a mother is not like our actual mother but more like our mother's mother. Nevertheless, one of the main reasons why people love this novel is the mother’s love towards her children is described as boundless, whether she is ignorant and weak or smart and strong. The mother prepares meals for her family without even taking off her clothes from work and eats leftover food after her family has a meal. Regardless of the past and the present, the sacrifice of mother can be compatible with that of Sun-Shin Lee who fought for his country. That is the reason the last sentence of the novel “Please take care of my mother” give us a deep impression.

 Play - My Mom

Thirty minutes has already gone after the play began; there are sniffling sounds here and there. From the beginning of the play, the audiences started to feel sympathetic towards the content of the play. Some laughed at the beginning, but they soon stopped and fell deep into the story. There was an intermission between the acts, which gave the audience personal time and, thanks to it, some of the audience could weep themselves out without caring of others' eyes. At the very end of the play, the daughter told her mother, “I love you, mom,” which she couldn't say before she entered the gates of heaven. At this particular moment, the entire theater was filled with tear. The mother has always said that she's sorry for not giving her children more in their life time, even though she sacrificed everything for them. Children slowly begin to realize their mother’s endless love. This is the prime mover that made us gather at the theater.

 Interview with Prof. Suk Lee

Q. In these days, the mother syndrome seems to have taken root in our society as one of cultural contents, reminding people of the affection of family. What do you think about this syndrome?

A. I think people are thirsty for love and they want consolation. Until the age of 12, children are influenced by their mother. As present life is so hard that people are missing that time. In my opinion, they believe their mother is the only person in the world who gave the feeling of being stable and comfortable to them and who really understood them. Personally, I am distressed about this cultural phenomenon.

Q. What do you think of the influence of this syndrome over individual and society?

A. Individually, it is clear. It gives comfort. Socially, I am not sure about that. I mean, it is too unpredictable. In a way, the role of women can be reconsidered. It can be more conservative because this is enforcing the role of mother. And maybe this syndrome includes the meaning of offering a rest time in such a society of the survival of the fittest that we cannot even have time to breathe freely. I hope the day will come when we live in a society where we can count the stars in sky at night.

People who enjoy the works related to 'Mother Syndrome' seem to seek an ideal mother. They realize the mothers portrayed in a variety of works are the same mothers as they dream in their mind. They feel a mental comfort when they experience their ideal mother through the books or plays because it reminds them of what their mothers have done for them til now. We wish that the “Mother Syndrome” will not be just a temporary cultural phenomenon, but instead, become something valuable in everyone's mind.
