The Dankook Herald conducted a survey on, "What words come to mind when you hear the word U.S?" Most of students answered ‘the richest country’ and ‘freedom.’ Since we were children, we have seen many movies about American heroism. So, the U.S. has naturally been regarded as a country of justice. Recently experts of each field started to wonder about their attitude and behavior, and specialists proposed a hypothesis about the duplicity of U.S. in foreign and economic policies, racial discrimination appearing through dramas and reality, including the war which America made for world peace.

<The Duality in War>

United States has been linked to war like a needle and thread for a long time. Actually, experts have said that the U.S. has been developed by occurring wars all over the world. Through the War with Iraq, we will analyze the double face of the U.S. After the 9.11 terror occurred, U.S. thought of Iraq as a major terrorist nation. It fired indiscriminately into Iraq. If Iraq planned to commit a terror on America, a few experts wondered why Iraq terrorists attacked the twin building which was built much stronger than the Statue of Liberty, the symbol of America. They believe the 9.11 terror attack was an excuse. In other words, the reason that the States started the War with Iraq wasn't for keeping world peace but for gaining oil from Iraq. America concealed their brutality to many people under the cover of freedom and peace for Iraqi.

<The Duality in Racial Equality>

Recently, watching American dramas are popular among the students. When watching, you can notice something strange in American dramas. There are more Asian actors in dramas than before. However, Asian and African-American actors still can't cast in leading roles. The background of where American dramas are made is the U.S., called Melting Pot. And, the U.S. always called itself a country for equality. However, they do not live up to their words in dramas. White actors play righteous and lovely roles while the other races play supporting roles. For instance, black men usually play the part of a criminal in dramas and movies. This circumstance is worse than it seems. Have you heard that White supremacists planned to kill President Barack Hussein Obama? This shows that they couldn't embrace the first black President in the U.S. history. Do you think racial discrimination in the States is solved? It is evident that there are still racial discrimination problems in the U.S.

¡ãAmerican soldiers helping Koreans by free handouts after the Korean War.

 <The Duality in Foreign Policy>

The U.S. has supported developing countries like African with free handouts for a long time. However, did you know there were hidden agendas behind free those handouts? We can see their hidden agendas throughout Korean history. For example, the Korean economic situation was the worst after the Korean War. At this time, U.S. supplied their products to Korea for free. Afterwards, the Korean economic situation was quickly alleviated. However, the Food Self-Sufficiency Ratio quickly plummeted. Experts believe that they may have planned to make inroads into the Korean agriculture market through those free handouts. If you believe that those free handouts were not so free a few years later, you are not wrong. Another example can be seen in 1961. Park Chung-Hee's authoritarian government was made in Korea by a military coup. At first, U.S. considered him a tyrant who violated human rights. But a few years later, there was a change of government in the U.S. When they planned the Vietnam War for democracy, they requested many troops. At that time, President Park made a decision to send troops to Vietnam for the U.S. After that decision, the American government declared him a hero for world peace. The States covered the human rights violated by the Korean government. America participated in foreign policy namely for its own interests.

¡ãMultinational corporations will rule the global market because of the FTA.

Recently, the U.S. has been paying attention to the FTA (Free Trade Agreement). They claim that it is desirable to remove the trade tariff to give world consumers reasonable opportunities and options. Experts believe that consumers may have more options at the start of FTA, but as time goes by, only multinational companies that have huge capital, like American corporations, will survive in world market. We can see this is true through the situation in world movie industry. Hollywood movies have 70 percent of the world movie market share. They also have 80 percent of the world movie market interest thanks to the abolition of the screen quota system around the world.

Even if the concept of equality is extremely important in the United States, racial discrimination has not been solved yet. We can also see the two faces of U.S. in foreign policy and wars that they made which they justified with peace and freedom. If you watch these policies minutely, you can see their own interest. In these situations, would you call the U.S. a righteous hero? U.S. is a nation like a wolf in sheep’s clothing.
