Losing Something Means Missing Something in Reality

Miss. Hwang had lost her hood T-shirts inside our university and realized it later. She had looked for everywhere, but she could not find it. Lost and Found(L&F) popped into her mind but she doesn't know where exactly it is, and she already knows that the possibilities of finding her item is highly unlikely. Thereby, she had given up searching for her clothes.

This case is very common among our students. Like this situation, when students lost their own item, most of them can't find it. When we did a research on a hundred of students about this situation, we found that people do not believe they would get his or her items back. Hence, we had reached the point where we wonder why the result ended up like this. What are reasons that students don't expect to find his or her items? What's wrong with this situation and what should we do to make things better?

▶ The poster are stuck on the wall
Certainly, the cause of losing belongings is because of each individual's carelessness. As previously stated, the person directly involved is primarily responsible for these accidents. However, it has to do with their exterior factors. We tried to do a survey to a hundred of Dankookians on the issue of 'Why do you think the rate of return is fairly low?' Most of them responded chiefly as 'the lack of individual morality.' Actually, a staff of the student affairs section said "Once we accept application about missing articles, we give missing articles back to the owner," "However, I had experienced this case just only twice for my period of service in this position." It means students don't bring them voluntarily to the student affairs section, even if they found lost articles. But there is some limit for this opinion which attributes to students, because they are not satisfied with the L&F system offered by DKU. For example, actually there is an L&F operated in Library.



You know, this L&F just keeps missing articles which were discovered in Library. Do you think people only lose their belongings in the library? Most students usually are in their classrooms to take classes, while they are at school. Therefore, we can assume that the place where lost articles were mainly found is in each college. However, L&F is not operated there. Could you believe it? It is not that colleges are not on their feet trying to return the lost articles to their owners, but only a few students know about where to report missing articles they have found. Actually, a male student who surveyed had mentioned "I was very confused about where to report it exactly." On the contrary, there's a case that a female student tried to find it through writing about it on Woong-seung woong-seung(the cyber community in the homepage of DKU) But there was no good result, so she tried to find her stuff by putting poster on the bulletin board. A few days later, she was very appalled, because she noticed her poster disappeared. Later, she knew that she hadn't got the permission to use bulletin board. From the above two examples, we can recognize that systems and infrastructures of L&F offered by DKU were not enough.

How to resolve this? DKU should pay attention to our students talking about how to find lost items. The most common way for our students to find their item is to stick posters. However, it's sometimes denied by the university, because it does not look good. If the university makes a board listing lost items, wouldn't it be beneficial for both who lost it and who wants to return it? The university has to find a way to support students in a way students want. The situation is the worst, because many students don't know where to find their lost item and return others' item. The system is not built well, therefore it's not reasonable to blame personal morality. It's better method to make the effective system and change the way students think. Therefore, the development of University is important. But, before that, our university has to hear what our students say. There are words, 'If you want to build a good building, the pillar has to be well built'. Like this, won't it be true to establish basic system first and then develop outside of school?
