The 'University' is originated by ancient Athenian nobles who had nothing to do started exploring truth, goodness and beauty. In Korean education law, it is aiming "To build up one's character, to study academy needed for nation and the development of human society, and it's aimed at commit for nation and development of human society." However, are Korean universities suitable for this law? Korean universities are now situated for the preparation of getting a job. The place for actualizing dreams of young people is changing for the spot of drinking alcohol.

Maybe you have thought about it at least once: What 'university means to us?
Then, how are the Korean universities these days? Nowaday's universities seem to have a different meaning against the dictionary saying. Most students said "University is a place where students are able to develop their profession and self-development, and have a lot of experiences for the future. Also it provides a high quality education." However, this is just our 'ideal' and it is quit different from real life. Recently, a freshman of one of universities in Chung-Ju died because of immoderate drink offered by her seniors. Through this incident, we can see an excessive drinking culture still remaining in Korean universities.

Also, nowaday's universities are considered to be a place to prepare for getting a job. Students choose a lecture that is easy to get credit than what is useful for them. The reasons why universities show different aspect unlike our thoughts are the following : Students have wrong visions about universities. They think of universities as a place of utopia where they can end the pain of living in the exam hell. Hence, when they are admitted to a university, they think 'This is the end of entrance exam.' In other words, they have less motivation in their mind in learning in university. Another thing is our country has less interest and affection in learning than any other country since our country has the cramming education system. In case of western countries, there is a good atmosphere of study's intercommunicating between professors and students. However, our country's education is too passive and there only is the questioning and answering form. To resolve this problem, we will have to encourage students to have interest in their major and encourage continuous communication between professors and students. Prof. Jong-Gun Kim, who teaches Introduction of Education, says "As the times changes, society wants us to do many things. Like this, I think the university should also be altered considering the request of society. Now we need universities having various aspects such as focusing on scholar attainment and also universities for training professionals. We know that the students are concerned about getting a job but the universities should not be weighted toward places for preparation of employment. The reason of this phenomenon is attributed to structure of society in Korea. We should create the employment environment which can demand graduates by encouraging the development of economy and industries. We also should change the methods of employment at private enterprise. The way to hire new recruits based on English skills is out of style. We should give weight to students' major and try to revive their profession. These days, students have no passion in their major because the companies hire them disregarding their major. Current students are studying both their major for graduation and also English and so on to get a job. This means that they are studying two fields. So if the social construction changes, the true meaning of universities would be clearly seen."

The university lets the young people to experience so many different things. It provides them to learn up and give freedom to research what they want freely. If you recognize an university as just a place for playing or getting a job, it is necessary for you to think deeply about what the university actually means to you, during this vacation.
