Two thirds of us are sugarholic suspected. (MBC documentary)

Sugar is attractive. Humans like sugar instinctively because of its sweetness. It helps the brain work. Also, it brings psychological stability and awakening. It is the reason why many students usually eat chocolate during exam period.
In case of Koreans, the amount of annual sugar consumption is one third of rice. It means that they eat one spoon of sugar per three spoons of rice. Most of us are already sugarholics or sugarholic suspected. But we don't know much about its hazards on health. Recently, I found out through a TV documentary that metabolically, sugar is decomposed like alcohol in the liver. In other words, sugar is as dangerous as alcohol.
So I tried living without sugar for a week from May 7 to 13, a sugar free project. Even if it was a short moment, I was a little scared of my life without sugar, which I have eaten every day.
On Monday morning, I ate soybean paste stew, kimchi and rice. I couldn't eat cooked beans, which is my favorite. I made a bottle of tomato juice for lunch. It was made of only tomatoes, there was no sugar. At school, I just drank an Americano. Of course, there was no sugar or syrup.
Tuesday morning was similar with the day before. At lunch, I ordered a fried rice at a Chinese place. I couldn't use any sauce. I just ate the rice and kimchi. I felt a sense of emptiness mentally.
At Wednesday lunchtime, my friends and I went to eat tteokbokki, but I just drank water. They ate ice cream for dessert. I just drank water continuously. How sad it is!
On Thursday morning, I waited for the Americano that I ordered. There was a cup of cafe mocha topped with whipping cream next to me. It stirred my jealousy. I pitied myself. After class, I went to a pub with my fellow students. There were no sugar free dishes, so I could not help but drinking alcohol on an empty stomach.
Friday, what a sweet day off! Actually, it was not so sweet because I couldn't eat any sugar. Frankly, I felt bloated, because of my hangover. I ate some orange and watermelon at home, enjoying the sweetness of the fruits.
On Saturday morning, I felt some freshness and lightness. I didn't sleep well the previous night, but I felt relaxed. I met my friend to do our assignment, and we went to a cafe. My friend ordered a cafe mocha topped with whipping cream and a piece of cheese cake. When the cake was served, my eyes were glazed. It was off my head, because I hadn't eaten sugar for the last 5 days.
Sunday, the concluding day. I went to the library to do my assignment with my friend. At lunchtime, she wanted to eat fried rice or spaghetti. When I heard the names of the foods, I began to salivate. However, it was just like the pain to thrust the temptation away. Going on way home, we ate baked chicken because I thought that fried chicken may contain some sugar. When falling sleep, I was happy that I could eat sugar from tomorrow.
As I felt through this last sugar free project, sugar is all around our lives. After the project, I realized that milk, soju, noodles and even soft tofu contain sugar. It is impossible to completely abstain from eating sugar.
The documentary that I mentioned showed an experiment about quitting soda. After the experiment, the weight and body fat percentage of the subject was lower and muscle mass was higher. Health could be better simply through stopping an ordinary food which contains sugar. Also, children who suffer seriously from atopy skin condition who quit eating sugar for 15 days will find the symptoms releived magically.
Sugar is comparable with smartphones. It is always within our hands. It has already passed throughout our lives and it is hard to break off.
It is not hard to reduce sugar in your daily routine. Food which contains sugar is spread all over our lives. If we choose food carefully, we can reduce sugar intake. I have a plan to quit soda, reduce snacks and eat less bread. From now on I might try to get less sugar consumption.
Summer is now coming. We can't cloak fat in our clothes anymore. Reducing sugar could be an easy and immediate way to lose weight. Reducing sugar intake in our daily routines could be easy. Moreover, it is not so sorrowful, as I experienced. I recommend Dankookians to take in less sugar for your health and beauty.
