Summer 2023 was a remarkable season for those who were fortunate to participate in the International Summer School (ISS) program at Dankook University (DKU). DKU's ISS program is a beacon of global education, leaving an unforgettable impression on all participants by fostering enduring friendships and promoting respect among varied cultures. The Dankook Herald (DKH) heard directly from the program's interns and students, allowing them to share their post-ISS reflections

The ISS program offers a tri-fold experience, encompassing three distinct categories: the Global Village, the Academic Program (AP), and the Korean Immersion Program (KIP). The primary objective of the Global Village is to facilitate language and cultural exchange between international students and their counterparts at DKU. Meanwhile, the AP and KIP are designed to provide foreign students with immersive opportunities to delve into Korean culture. While each program assumes a unique form and focus, they all share a common mission centered around fostering cultural exchange and understanding among participants. Jeniffer (Junior, Foreign Language) shared her involvement with the KIP program and her memorable experiences when assisting foreign students during her 3-week internship. She emphasized the program's role in promoting internationality at DKU and its significance in facilitating cultural exchange. Kim Geon-won (Sophomore, School of Communications) worked as an internship staff for two months. Her primary role was to support the lives of foreign students and document the program through photos and videos. She applied for the program due to her interest in international exchange and her desire to help students create memorable experiences. After spending the summer with the students, they ended with unforgettable moments including the emotional farewells during the final days of the AP and KIP, as participants formed deep bonds throughout their time together. One of the significant impacts of the ISS program on participants was fostering respect and understanding among diverse cultures. The program's flexible approach, such as allowing students to choose activities and attentive consideration of preferences, played a crucial role in facilitating mutual respect and closeness. Despite challenges like health issues, the program successfully handled them, thanks to the dedicated efforts of ISS interns and international staff who provided support and medical assistance when needed. Participation in the program led to personal growth for many students. They gained insights into Korean culture and language, and some reported increased confidence and willingness to express themselves.

The DKH conducted brief interviews with international students who participated in the ISS program, and below are some of their perspectives on the program. Gina from the UK discovered the program while browsing her school's website and was drawn by the Global Village aspect where she could teach English. She initially had no expectations but found the program to be a life-changing experience that exceeded all her hopes. Her most memorable experience was in the Global Village, where she felt part of a close-knit family. She also appreciated the beautiful Cheonan campus and, most of all, the delicious Korean food. The experience made her more globally aware and open-minded, and she is considering teaching as a future career. She formed lasting friendships with her fellow students and encouraged future participants not to hesitate and seize this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Josh, from Minnesota, learned about the program through personal connections and his desire to study abroad in Korea. He initially expected to attend classes and explore Korea but was pleasantly surprised by the program's depth and support. He valued the dedication and support of the ISS team and cherished the close friendships he formed. Memorable experiences included cultural activities like visiting Korean saunas and riding an exhilarating amusement park ride. Josh learned the importance of pursuing subjects one enjoys rather than rigidly following a career path, and he was also able to form lasting friendships both with fellow international students and Koreans. Jimena Rodriguez Vallejo from California first heard about the program through her school and was drawn to Korea. With no specific expectations, she embarked on the program and found herself missing it once it ended. Her new friends became the highlight of her experience as they shared unforgettable moments. She appreciated the program's role in fostering connections, both through classes and group activities. Alycia from Canada discovered the program through her school's exchange program options and recommendations from colleagues. She cherished moments spent doing karaoke, sharing meals, and exploring Korea with friends. Her most memorable moments included the mud festival, a temple stay during a rainstorm, and a class on English language teaching. She learned the value of being open to others and encouraged future participants to take the plunge, engage in cultural exchange, and be open to new experiences.

The ISS Program's success extends beyond the students' personal growth, resonating with DKU's global vision and reputation. A lot of participants expressed a desire to return to Korea and DKU, which enhances the university's international program and opens opportunities for Dankookians (Students of DKU) to engage in enriching international exchange programs around the world.
