Personality, creativity, speciality, and diversity. These words are the most important values today as the world pursues more unique and different qualities. There are a variety of people, lifestyles, and values, and these individual characters deserve to be respected. However, the majority always call the minority ‘heresay’ and
pressure them to keep up with common culture. People are still prone to judge things that are different from their values by measuring them against their universal standards. However, there are negative aspects to the concept of ‘universality.’

Universality means the characteristics shared by all individuals. The individuals form a group based on their shared qualities. Therefore, it can be argued that a component of universality is its distinctiveness from others who do not share the same characteristics. However, when this distinctiveness grows, it can lead to
diversity, but the value of universality can disrupt the value of a group's diversity. This situation, which universality ignores, occurs frequently in everyday life. Let’s look to prove this theory. There are youths who are in between jobs, getting rest for a sense of refreshment or traveling to enlarge their personal experiences.
They may have their reasons, but the people around them offer priggish looks simply because they don’t act same as others at the same time. There are many people that are considered ‘outsiders’, regardless of their personal circumstances, such as older single women, introverts, and students who abandoned their studies to explore the world in a different way. We can also include people with social challenges, such as those with confused sexual identities, homosexuals, and those with cultural differences.

However, contemporary society seems to be beginning to value diversity after independent films, such as ‘Begin Again’ and ‘Her’, became in vogue. Independent films freely deal with various materials or problems and sometimes make experimental attempts to deal with materials that are hard to understand under the guise of universal values. The responses to the diverse values put forward in these film are explosive, while in real life, the gap in our values isn’t being recognized by the people.

We should constantly think about our individuality, how we are different from others, and be fully aware of the fact that others are seeking the same recognition. Individuals are all different, but everyone has their own goals, making their own schedule, and there exists a value in the process of devoting oneself to their own goals. Only in the case where a perso’s way is against the social regulations or morality of a society, can we argue that the values of others are wrong. Otherwise, we can only say that they are different. Each human has a unique character.

Though it is impossible to understand others completely, we have to at least try to recognize our differences, and cultivate an ability to sympathize with them. John Locke (1632-1704), an English philosopher said, “New opinions are always suspected, and usually opposed, without any other reason, but because they are not already common.” These words are applicable to the present day. However, we should try hard to deny his words rather than agree with them unconditionally. Stop pushing for a hollow standard known as a the ‘common value’ of individuals and embrace instead the uniqueness of being you.
