Dankook University has established a new organization to help international exchange students adapt to school life and form a bond with local Dankookians (Students of DKU). Named the Dankook International Ambassador (DIA), the organization was formed by reorganizing the purpose and activities of the former international student club of the Jukjeon campus GTN. The DIA also plans to launch a ‘Buddy Program’ to connect local Dankookians and international exchange students as a part of its efforts. The Dankook Herald (DKH) is pleased to introduce the DIA and its new ‘Buddy Program’.

DKU established the DIA to increase the learning satisfaction of foreign exchange students admitted to DKU, encourage the dispatch abroad of Dankookians, and foster a sense of internationalism and volunteerism. DIA is involved in planning and operating various cultural events for international exchange students to help them adjust to Korea and introduce both campuses to our honored foreign guests. In the same context, their newly planned Buddy Program is a volunteer program that connects local Dankookians and exchange students on a one-to-one basis to assist them in settling down in Korea and adapting to school life during the semester. The Buddy Program’s ultimate goal is to improve our understanding of each other's. Through this program, Dankookians will be able to enhance their foreign language abilities and increase their global awareness. Moreover, Dankookians who aspire to become exchange students at foreign universities in the future can prepare themselves in advance and gain an indirect experience of the process. The main activities of the Buddy Program are to help exchange students navigate their new academic institution, orient them on the usage of key facilities, such as lecture halls and libraries, and assist them in adapting to daily life such as utilizing public transportation, buying a USIM, and purchasing everyday essentials. Additionally, the program volunteers offer direction on overall school life, including club activities as well as other school events and festivals. To successfully complete the program, participants must visit nearby convenience facilities and some tourist attractions. The DIA and the Buddy Program are worthwhile experiences for local Dankookians and international exchange students.

A spokesperson for the DIA and Buddy said, with the support of the Office of International Affairs, they anticipate hosting many events such as a ‘Movie Night’ every two weeks where participants can share their diverse reactions to the film from their international perspectives. For more information on upcoming events, please follow the Instagram account of DIA (@dankook_dia).

The Buddy Program was the brainchild of former student ambassadors who wanted to do more than what the previous program offered Local students wanted to broaden their cultural knowledge while foreign students wanted to experience Korea fully during their time here. To meet both objectives, the Buddy Program was formed to help exchange students adapt quickly and build stronger bonds with local Dankookians.

Since there would be subsidies and some community service hours granted for the buddies, the program coordinator had to filter out students who lacked a genuine interest in the cause. Participants for both programs were students who showed genuine passion for the Buddy Program on a first-come, first-served basis. He prioritized students who consider global relationships valuable. He sought participants who not only had an interest in cultivating a different mindset but also were keen on tearing down the invisible barrier between students of different cultures. Buddies can experience other cultures by interacting with each other and become more comfortable around foreigners as well. The experience enables them to become true international Dankookians with global leadership skills.

Participants in the DIA and Buddy Programs, have a genuine spirit of service. They take part in many activities that help them develop new friendships with a wider base of people at DKU. The DKH looks forward to witnessing the passionate participation of Dankookians keen on fostering this global attitude, and have fun at a variety of events that help our guests learn and adapt to Korean life.
