It has been over two years since Russia invaded Ukraine. Amid fading hopes for a peaceful resolution, the United States and the European Union (EU) have announced additional sanctions against Russia. However, Russia continues its military operation in Ukraine, further escalating the conflict.

In the early stages of the war, Ukraine managed to withstand Russia's attacks with the support of the United States, the EU, and others, better than expected. However, last year, Ukraine's major counteroffensive operations failed, and with reduced Western support, Russia has recently gained complete control over eastern Ukraine. Building on this momentum, Russia is demanding recognition of the occupied territories from Ukraine in a repeated assertive manner. Russia currently controls roughly 20 percent of Ukrainian territory, a situation deemed highly unacceptable by Ukraine. So far, casualties on both sides have been significant, with Ukraine suffering over 80,000 deaths and Russia around 60,000 deaths. Moreover, most of the combat has occurred within Ukrainian territory, resulting in additional material losses estimated at nearly 2 trillion dollars.

Numerous analysts suggest that despite the escalating damage, ending the conflict will likely be challenging in the near term. On February 16, Alexey Navalny, who was dubbed Putin’s political rival, passed away. As Navalny was a symbol of opposition to the Putin administration, experts say that now it is almost impossible to speak out against the government in Russia. Putin is expected to serve a fifth consecutive term with the support of around 80 percent of voters in the upcoming Russian presidential election. While Western countries have hesitated in assisting Ukraine, US President Biden has expressed support. However, many Republican lawmakers have opposed extending further aid. Furthermore, certain EU nations, including the Netherlands and Hungary, have recently taken a stance against aiding Ukraine despite the broader EU support.

Contrary to initial expectations, the Russia-Ukraine war has lasted for a long time for two years. Western support is gradually decreasing with the intensifying civilian and territorial damage. Ukraine’s resilience against Russian attacks relies on the military and financial backing from the United States and the EU. Consequently, the availability of continued Western support will shape the war’s outcome in the days ahead.
