‘Zizz Zizz', 'Clink!’ The artist is working in the atelier decorated with gorgeous art glass. At the side of the hallway, there are workrooms ornamented with various works of art and signs informing the artist's profile. Also, in the middle of the corridor, works that could be seen in the gallery are lining up. Sushi restaurants with fresh fishes are flopping around, beauty parlors with hairdressers are clipping people’s hair with scissors, stores where middle aged women are selling blankets. Where is this completely mismatched place? This is the Seoul Art Space-SINDANG.

Seoul art space is what is to combine the lagged place of Seoul with the art for original cultural city. Because projects give financial support to artists and cultural enjoyment to residents in daily life, it comes into the spotlight. Art factories are already a current image of the world artistic community. ‘Le 104’ in France, ‘BankART1929’ in Japan, and ‘Tasnaz 798’ in China are attracting the public attention through art factory. Lagged place changes into a place of art, cities get back the vitality because of inflow of travelers and creation of jobs, and art is accompanied by the originality. The Dankook Herald went to the Seoul Art Space-SINDANG.

Walk for 2 minutes from Exit No. 1 or 2 from Sindang Station, subway line 2. The central market is busy with haggling. At the market, there is an underground shopping complex passage decorated with beautiful drawings. After passing the sushi restaurant lined up, landscape like exhibition appears. Vacant stores were used by artists through Seoul city’s support. Through each artist, they polish up each art, shares advices, and they would be an accelerator for each other. They communicate with the inhabitants by holding various events. We interviewed artist E, Yoon-cheol.

There have been the rich-get-richer and the poor-get-poorer in the artistic community. Most of the artist’s purpose is not wealth but art itself. But many have spent tough times being poor. However, I think that support for art have continually increased, so I at ease. What artists need is the interest of people. But it’s pitiful that people rarely come and go to these places. Nevertheless, we always make an effort to communicate with the people and listen to their advices. So we have a self-reflection time and we grow. We sometimes open the exhibitions linked with the community centre and donate the income from selling.”

It is fascinating to visit the Seoul Art Space-SINDANG, but we felt that more effort to be a culturally advanced country is needed when we found empty mood there. We would expect that many programs would help meet their problems. Easy clothes! Easy mind! We hope that Dankookians meet their cultural desire through valuable times.
